Learn Swedish in Finland – Summer Course in Porvoo

27.7-1.8.2026

Have you always wanted to learn Swedish while experiencing Nordic culture up close?

Join us for a unique one-week Swedish for Beginners course in the charming seaside town of Porvoo, just one hour from Helsinki, the bustling capital of Finland.

Why study Swedish in Finland?

Did you know that Swedish is the official second language of Finland? The presence of the Swedish language in Finland goes far back in history and today, there are around 300 000 native Swedish speakers in the country. Porvoo offers an interesting bilingual setting unique for the southern part of Finland. Swedish grammar is more simple than for example Finnish grammar and you will be able to communicate in basic Swedish after one week of intensive studies.

Language of instruction at the course: English

This course is designed for international participants with little or no prior knowledge of Swedish (A1-level). You will be studying at Borgå folkakademi – a private folk school and the oldest school of it’s kind in Finland, located in a historically interesting setting surrounded by both nature and urban life.

But this is more than just a language course.

During the week, you will also:
– Stay at our cozy campus accommodation (optional)

– Explore the picturesque old town of Porvoo
– Learn about and experience Finnish and Nordic culture first hand
– Join excursions in the surrounding nature

Meet your teacher

Irakli Shalamberidze

Hi, I am Irakli!

In my classes, I focus a lot on speaking and actually using the language in real-life situations – not just memorizing grammar rules. I aim to create a relaxed and supportive atmosphere where it’s okay to make mistakes and everyone feels comfortable participating.

I also enjoy introducing my students to Swedish and Finnish culture, including celebrations, traditions, and everyday life. For me, it’s important that learning feels enjoyable, practical, and fun.

I’m a Social Science student at the University of Helsinki with a strong interest in languages and international relations. I speak several languages, including Swedish, English, and Georgian, and I enjoy using languages as a way to connect with others and understand different cultures.

Alongside my studies, I have worked as a Swedish teacher for adult immigrants in Finland.

I’m really looking forward to meeting you and helping you get started with Swedish in a natural and motivating way!
